Arrange interpreting first

English is the working language of Indian hospitals and Russian is not widely spoken there. Say in your first message that you need Russian or Turkmen and an interpreter will be arranged for the consultation and for the stay. Do not leave this to be sorted out on arrival.

Medical records written in Russian will need translating, and it is worth doing properly: pathology and radiology reports use precise terminology where an approximate rendering can mislead. Bring the original documents as well as the translations, because a specialist can often read numbers and measurements directly.

India, Turkey or Iran

Most patients from Central Asia are comparing destinations rather than deciding whether to travel at all, so it is worth being straightforward about where India's advantages actually lie, and where they do not.

India is generally less expensive for complex surgery, and the gap widens as the procedure gets bigger. Our prices are published, dated and taken from partner-hospital lists, so you can compare them directly rather than guessing.
Implants are inside the package price. Stents, heart valves, joint implants and spinal metalwork are included in every figure on this site. This is where quotes from elsewhere most often turn out not to be comparable, so when you compare, ask each provider explicitly whether the implant is included.
Turkey is closer, and for a short procedure the shorter journey may outweigh a price difference. That is a real advantage and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Language is easier in Turkey for Russian speakers, since Russian is more widely spoken in Turkish hospitals serving this market. In India it has to be arranged.
India's depth is in complex work: transplant, cardiac surgery, oncology and neurosurgery, where volume and subspecialisation matter most.

For a straightforward procedure, weigh the journey. For complex surgery, weigh the total cost with implants included and the experience of the unit.

From Ashgabat there are direct services to India as well as connections through Dubai or Istanbul. Journey times are considerably shorter than from Africa or the Pacific, which makes a diagnostic trip followed by a separate treatment trip more practical than it is for most of our patients.

Money

Hospital bills are settled in Indian rupees or in US dollars depending on the hospital. The manat is not convertible in India, so plan on transferring funds or carrying US dollars rather than expecting to change money on arrival. Ask the hospital's international patient office which payment methods they accept before you travel, and be aware that international card limits catch people out when a large deposit is requested. Arranging a bank transfer in advance is usually simpler than everything else.

Budget beyond the package price. Every cost table on this site excludes flights, visa, accommodation outside the hospital stay, pre-operative investigations and treatment for complications. Build in a contingency, because the most common reason a trip becomes stressful is a stay that runs longer than planned.

After you go home

This is the part of medical travel that most often goes wrong, and it is entirely preventable. Before you leave India, make sure you have your discharge summary and treatment record in writing, your medication list with generic drug names rather than only Indian brand names, a clear follow-up schedule, and the name of a doctor in Turkmenistan who will take over your monitoring.

Then check, before you fly, that the specific medicines you have been prescribed are available and affordable where you live. Anti-rejection medication after a transplant, blood thinners after a mechanical heart valve, and thyroid hormone after thyroid surgery all have to continue without interruption. Records in Russian should be translated properly, and bring the originals too.
