IVF treatment in India

India has large, established fertility centres and treats international patients routinely. The honest part most clinics leave out is that success depends far more on your age and your own test results than on the clinic you choose, and that a cycle asks for more time in the country than people expect.

Also called
IVF, in vitro fertilisation, test tube baby, assisted reproduction
Main techniques
IVF, ICSI, frozen embryo transfer, donor eggs or sperm
Time in India
Roughly 3 to 4 weeks for a fresh cycle, or two shorter trips
What decides success
Your age and ovarian reserve, far more than the clinic's brochure

Read this before you compare clinics

Fertility is the branch of medicine where marketing and evidence diverge most, so this page starts where the sales pitch usually ends.

A clinic's advertised success rate tells you about the patients it treated, not about you. A centre that mainly treats women in their early thirties will publish better numbers than one that takes on difficult cases, and neither figure predicts your outcome. The variables that actually matter are your age, your ovarian reserve measured by AMH and antral follicle count, the sperm analysis, and whether there is a specific blockage or condition in the way.

So the question worth asking is not "what is your success rate" but "given my age and my AMH, what would you expect per cycle, and how many cycles does your plan assume?" A specialist who answers that with a range and a caveat is being straight with you. One who answers with a single impressive percentage is quoting a brochure.

Age is the single largest factor and it is not negotiable by any technology. If you are being told that a particular add-on will overcome it, be sceptical. The most valuable thing an honest consultation can do is tell you early, while you still have options, rather than after three cycles.

What a cycle actually involves

  1. Testing first. Hormone blood tests, an ultrasound to count follicles, a semen analysis, and checks of the uterus and tubes. This can largely be done at home and sent for review.
  2. Ovarian stimulation. Around ten to twelve days of daily injections to grow multiple eggs, with scans every few days to watch the response. This is the part that ties you to one place.
  3. Egg collection. A short procedure under sedation, taking about twenty minutes.
  4. Fertilisation in the laboratory. Either standard IVF, where eggs and sperm are placed together, or ICSI, where a single sperm is injected into each egg.
  5. Embryo culture. Three to five days of growth under observation before transfer or freezing.
  6. Transfer. One embryo, usually, placed into the uterus in a quick outpatient procedure. Remaining good embryos are frozen.
  7. The wait. A blood pregnancy test about two weeks later.

How long you have to be in India

This is where fertility travel most often goes wrong in the planning, because the timeline is not a single appointment. A fresh cycle from the start of stimulation to embryo transfer runs roughly three to four weeks, and the middle of it involves scans every two or three days that cannot be skipped or moved.

There is an alternative worth asking about: split the treatment. Do stimulation, egg collection and fertilisation on one trip, freeze the embryos, and return later for a frozen embryo transfer, which needs far less time. For someone travelling from abroad with work and family commitments, two shorter trips are often more practical than one long one, and freezing does not reduce the chance of success in the way people fear.

ICSI, donor eggs and the add-ons

Insurance

This came up more than any other question in our research, and the answer is usually disappointing: most health insurance policies exclude fertility treatment, in India and in most other countries. Some employer schemes and a small number of policies now include it, often with conditions on age, on the number of cycles, and on waiting periods.

Ask your insurer in writing, before you travel, naming the specific procedures. A verbal yes from a call centre is worth nothing when the claim is assessed. If you are covered, a written estimate from the hospital is what your insurer will need to see.

Why there is no price table on this page. This treatment is not on the partner-hospital price list we publish from, and we will not put an invented figure on a medical page to fill the gap. Ask at the consultation and you will be given a written estimate for your own case instead. Everything we do publish comes from that list and is dated.

Two things to insist on when you do get that estimate. Ask whether it is per cycle or a package of several, and ask which medicines are included, because stimulation drugs are a large and variable part of the total and are the item most often quoted separately.

Questions patients ask

How much does IVF cost in India?

We do not publish a figure, because IVF is not on the partner-hospital price list this site quotes from and we will not invent a number for a medical page. You will be given a written estimate after a consultation. When you receive it, check whether it is per cycle or a package, and whether stimulation medicines are included, since those are the two things that most often make a quoted price misleading.

What is the success rate of IVF in India?

Any single percentage is misleading, because a clinic's published rate reflects the patients it treats rather than your case. Your age and ovarian reserve matter far more than the clinic. Ask a specialist what they would expect given your age and your AMH result, and how many cycles their plan assumes.

How long does IVF take, and how long must I stay in India?

A fresh cycle runs about three to four weeks from the start of stimulation to embryo transfer, with scans every two or three days in the middle that cannot be moved. Ask about splitting it into two shorter trips: collection and freezing on the first, a frozen embryo transfer on the second.

What is the difference between IVF and ICSI?

In standard IVF, eggs and sperm are placed together and fertilisation happens on its own. In ICSI, an embryologist injects a single sperm directly into each egg. ICSI is used where sperm count, movement or shape is the problem, or where fertilisation has previously failed. It should be recommended for a specific reason rather than by default.

Does insurance cover IVF in India?

Most policies exclude fertility treatment, in India and elsewhere, though some employer schemes and a few policies now include it with conditions on age, cycle numbers and waiting periods. Ask your insurer in writing, naming the specific procedures, before you travel. A verbal assurance is not worth anything at claim time.

Is there an age limit for IVF in India?

Indian regulation sets limits on assisted reproduction, and clinics also apply their own clinical judgement. The rules in this area have changed in recent years, so confirm the current position with the clinic directly rather than relying on an older web page, including anything you read here.

Can I use donor eggs or a surrogate?

Donation and surrogacy are tightly regulated in India and the regulations have been revised recently. Whether either is available to you, as a foreign national, depends on current law rather than on clinic preference. Ask the clinic to confirm the position in writing before you make any plan that depends on it.
