Getting there
Dar es Salaam has some of the better connectivity to India in East Africa, with both direct and one-stop options depending on the season and the carrier. Journey times are shorter than from most of the countries we work with, which makes a preliminary trip for diagnosis and a later trip for treatment more practical than it would be from further away.

What Tanzanian patients travel for
- Cancer. The commonest reason. Cervical cancer in particular is a major burden across East Africa and is highly treatable when caught early, with brachytherapy being essential to curing it rather than optional.
- Cardiac surgery, including rheumatic valve disease and congenital defects in children.
- Kidney transplant at $12,500, with a living near-relative donor. Read the donor rules before planning.
- Joint replacement, knees from $3,700 and hips from $4,500, with both joints on one trip costing considerably less than two.
- Sickle cell disease, which is common across the region and where a transplant in childhood can be curative.
A note on cervical cancer
It is worth singling out because the picture is genuinely hopeful and widely misunderstood. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers there is, through HPV vaccination and screening, and one of the most treatable when found early. Even locally advanced disease is frequently curable with chemoradiation followed by brachytherapy.
Two practical consequences. If you are travelling for something else and have never been screened, ask for it at the same visit. And if you have been diagnosed, the completeness of the treatment matters enormously: chemoradiation without brachytherapy substantially reduces the chance of cure, so ask specifically whether brachytherapy is part of the plan.
Visa and documents

Language
English is widely used in Tanzanian medical records and is the working language of Indian hospitals, so documents usually transfer without difficulty. For the consultation, a Swahili interpreter can be arranged and is worth requesting if you would rather describe symptoms in Swahili. Ask in advance.

Money
Hospital bills are settled in Indian rupees or in US dollars depending on the hospital. The shilling is not convertible in India, so plan on transferring funds or carrying US dollars rather than expecting to change money on arrival. Ask the hospital's international patient office which payment methods they accept before you travel, and be aware that international card limits catch people out when a large deposit is requested. Arranging a bank transfer in advance is usually simpler than everything else.
Budget beyond the package price. Every cost table on this site excludes flights, visa, accommodation outside the hospital stay, pre-operative investigations and treatment for complications. Build in a contingency, because the most common reason a trip becomes stressful is a stay that runs longer than planned.
After you go home
This is the part of medical travel that most often goes wrong, and it is entirely preventable. Before you leave India, make sure you have your discharge summary and treatment record in writing, your medication list with generic drug names rather than only Indian brand names, a clear follow-up schedule, and the name of a doctor in Tanzania who will take over your monitoring.
Then check, before you fly, that the specific medicines you have been prescribed are available and affordable where you live. Anti-rejection medication after a transplant, blood thinners after a mechanical heart valve, and thyroid hormone after thyroid surgery all have to continue without interruption.
