Chemotherapy in India
Chemotherapy uses medicines that kill or slow cancer cells throughout the body. It is given in cycles, with rest between them so your body can recover, and is often combined with surgery or radiation. India delivers the full range of modern chemotherapy at a fraction of Western cost, in accredited cancer centres.

How chemotherapy works
Cancer cells divide faster than most healthy cells, and chemotherapy medicines target rapidly dividing cells. Because the drugs travel through the bloodstream, they can reach cancer that has spread beyond one spot, which is what sets chemotherapy apart from surgery and radiation. That same reach is also why it causes the side effects it does: some fast-growing healthy cells, such as those in hair and the gut lining, are affected too.
Treatment is given in cycles: a dose, then a rest period, then another. The rest is not wasted time. It lets your healthy tissue recover while the cancer struggles to, and the pattern is repeated for a set number of cycles chosen by your oncologist.
Why and when it is used
Common reasons to use it
- To shrink a tumour before surgery or radiation
- To clear cancer cells left behind after surgery
- To treat cancer that has spread to more than one area
- As the main treatment for cancers that respond well to it, such as many blood cancers
- To control an advanced cancer and relieve symptoms
When another approach may fit better
- A single, contained tumour that surgery or radiosurgery can treat directly
- Cancers that respond poorly to the available drugs
- Cases where your general health needs to be built up first
Whether chemotherapy is right, and which drugs, is a decision for an oncologist looking at your type and stage of cancer. A specialist who prescribes before seeing your reports is guessing. The teleconsultation exists to answer this properly for your case.
Side effects, and how they are managed
Side effects are the thing people fear most, and modern care has changed them considerably. Not everyone loses their hair; it depends on the drugs used. Nausea, which was once the worst part, is now controlled well in most patients with anti-sickness medicines given alongside treatment. Tiredness, a higher risk of infection, and changes in appetite are common and are actively managed rather than simply endured.
The specific side effects depend entirely on which drugs you are given, so the useful conversation is about your regimen, not chemotherapy in general. Your oncologist can tell you what to expect from your particular drugs and what will be done to keep you comfortable.
What it costs in India
Chemotherapy is priced per cycle rather than as one figure, so your total follows the plan. These are indicative package prices from our partner hospitals.
| Item | Indicative cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Oncology evaluation | $800 | Assessment and treatment planning, outpatient |
| Chemotherapy, per cycle | from $800 | Day care. Varies considerably with the drugs used |
| Chemoradiation course | $6,500 | Chemotherapy given with radiotherapy, around 6 weeks |
Indicative package prices as at July 2026, not a quotation. What the package includes: hospital charges, the surgeon's fee, medicines given during your stay, and any implants and consumables. Not included: pre-operative investigations, flights, visa, accommodation outside the hospital stay, or treatment for complications. Your written estimate follows the oncologist's review of your reports. No part of it is a fee to us; the hospital pays us, so your bill is never marked up.
One practical point for international patients: because a full course runs over months, many people have the plan set in India, receive the first cycles here, and complete the rest at home under an agreed protocol. That can reduce the total cost of the trip considerably. Ask your oncologist whether your regimen allows it.
How long you will stay
A single cycle is often a day visit, but a full course runs over weeks or months. Some patients complete their whole course in India; others have the plan set here and continue part of it at home under guidance. Your oncologist will explain the schedule so you and any companion can plan the trip realistically.
Questions patients ask
How much does one chemotherapy cycle cost in India?
It depends on the drugs your cancer needs, which vary enormously in price, and on how many cycles are planned. India is substantially cheaper than Western countries for the same treatment. Rather than a misleading single figure, you receive a written estimate for your specific regimen after an oncologist has reviewed your case.
Will I definitely lose my hair?
Not necessarily. Hair loss depends on which chemotherapy drugs are used; some cause it and some do not. Where it happens it is usually temporary, and hair regrows after treatment ends. Your oncologist can tell you whether your specific drugs are likely to affect your hair.
Is chemotherapy very painful?
The treatment itself is usually not painful; it is given through a drip or as tablets. The difficulty is in the side effects, and these are far better controlled than they used to be. Anti-sickness medicines, for example, prevent severe nausea in most patients today.
Can I have chemotherapy and keep working or travelling?
Many people manage light activity between cycles, but it depends on the drugs and how you respond. Because treatment runs over weeks, patients travelling from abroad usually plan an extended stay or arrange to continue part of the course at home. Your oncologist will help you plan around your life.
Is chemotherapy free anywhere in India?
Some government hospitals in India offer subsidised or free treatment for residents, but these are not set up for international patients and involve long waits. For someone travelling from abroad, the realistic route is a private accredited centre, where the value comes from cost far below Western prices with no waiting, and a clear written estimate up front.
Can chemotherapy cure my cancer?
For some cancers, especially certain blood cancers, chemotherapy can be curative. For others it controls the disease or supports surgery and radiation rather than curing alone. What is realistic depends entirely on your type and stage of cancer, which an oncologist can tell you honestly after seeing your reports.
