What decides your treatment
Two women with breast cancer can need very different treatment. What shapes the plan is the stage, the size and grade of the tumour, whether lymph nodes are involved, and crucially the tumour's receptor status: whether it is hormone-receptor positive, HER2 positive, or triple-negative. That receptor status is what makes hormone therapy or targeted drugs possible or not, so if you have a pathology report, it is the single most useful document to send.
The treatments used
Surgery
Either breast-conserving surgery, removing the tumour and a margin around it, or a mastectomy removing the whole breast. Which is appropriate depends on tumour size and position, not on preference alone. Reconstruction can often be done at the same time or later.
Chemotherapy
Given before surgery to shrink a tumour, or after to clear remaining cells. Not every breast cancer needs it; the decision rests on stage, grade and receptor status.
Radiation therapy
Commonly follows breast-conserving surgery to reduce the chance of the cancer returning in the same area. Usually a daily course over some weeks. For left-sided cancers, ask about breath-hold technique to keep radiation away from the heart.
Hormone and targeted therapy
For hormone-receptor positive cancers, tablets that block oestrogen are taken for five to ten years, and can be continued at home after you return. For HER2 positive cancers, targeted drugs are added. Both have transformed outcomes for the cancers they suit.
If your cancer is on the left side
This is worth raising yourself, because it is easy to overlook and it matters for decades. The heart sits directly behind the left breast, so radiotherapy to a left-sided breast cancer can deliver a small dose to the heart. That carries a low but real long-term risk of heart problems appearing many years later, which matters most for younger women with a long life ahead.
The technique that addresses it is deep inspiration breath-hold. You take a deep breath and hold it, which inflates the lungs and physically pushes the heart away from the chest wall, and treatment is delivered only during those breath-holds. Nothing is asked of you beyond holding a breath for around twenty seconds, practised beforehand.
